 Collection
Identifier: BMA-CW

Scope and Contents

The Carolyn Wyeth Collection is an artificially curated assemblage, with materials sourced from various locations, including items that Brandywine staff found within the Wyeth family home and items donated by Betsy Wyeth and Frank Delle Donne over various years. Spanning Carolyn Wyeth’s life, the collection includes everything from her early childhood drawings to her more mature works, offering a comprehensive view of her artistic growth and personal journey. It shows her development as an artist, her achievements in the public sphere, and her identity within the broader Wyeth family legacy. The collection highlights her professional accomplishments, such as exhibition catalogues and newspaper articles detailing her success as both an artist and a teacher. Correspondence with influential figures—including President Richard Nixon and his wife Patricia, writers, filmmakers, and her family—demonstrates her respected position in the art world and beyond. At the same time, medical records and Frank Delle Donne’s memoir reveal a more personal side of her life, shedding light on the challenges she faced, hinting at the emotional and health struggles that shaped her career.

Biographical / Historical

Carolyn Wyeth (1909-1994) was an American painter and a member of the well-known Wyeth family, a legacy of artists spanning several generations. She was the second daughter of the influential artist and illustrator N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) and grew up in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where the Wyeths lived and worked. Carolyn’s art was deeply shaped by her father’s teachings and her early life in a household steeped in creativity and artistic rigor. Though she was surrounded by the often-grand themes of her father’s and brother’s work, Carolyn’s art retained an intensely personal, introspective quality. Her paintings often feature scenes from her immediate environment. Carolyn taught painting for many years in her father’s studio, mentoring younger artists and influencing a generation of students.

Abstract

The collection documents the life, artistic career, and personal experiences of Carolyn Wyeth (1909-1994), an artist and member of the renowned Wyeth family. The materials span a range of formats, including newspaper clippings, exhibition catalogues, personal correspondence, photographs, and artwork, providing rich insight into both her public achievements and private life. Central to the collection are articles and records of Carolyn’s exhibitions, her teaching career, and her contributions to the broader Wyeth legacy, often highlighting her distinct artistic voice within a family of celebrated artists.

This is an artificial collection with many items found by Brandywine Research Center staff inside the Wyeth family home in Chadds Ford, after it was gifted to the Museum. Other items in the collection were collected and donated by Betsy James Wyeth (wife of Andrew Wyeth) and Frank Delle Donne (former husband of Carolyn Wyeth).

Items of research value include Carolyn Wyeth’s childhood drawings and early works such as her hand-drawn paper dolls and animal cutouts, as well as sketches and finished artworks, reflecting her evolving artistic style and interests.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged from the box level, followed by folder, and then item. Most of the materials are arranged chronologically. Otherwise, materials (such as the paper dolls and childhood artwork) were kept in the original order they were found.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Unless specified that items were from Betsy Wyeth or Frank Delle Donne, all other items were compiled artificially by Brandywine staff.

Processing Information

The collection was originally received by Brandywine staff from the Wyeth family home and from donations by Betsy James Wyeth and Frank Delle Donne. These items were originally part of the artificial, unprocessed collection, “Miscellaneous Wyeth Family Collections” as Box 4, 6, and 7. Originally, Box 5 of this collection contained personal medical records of Carolyn Wyeth (from 1991-1994); these were destroyed in December of 2021 by Research Center staff at the direction of Museum administration. The remaining three boxes were removed from this collection, reprocessed by curatorial volunteer and graduate student Kayla Maciorkoski in the Fall of 2024, and then re-labeled as Box 1 and 2 of the Carolyn Wyeth Collection. Box 6 was deaccessioned as it only contained labels used in the exhibition, “Unique Force: The Art of Carolyn Wyeth” (2009). Box 1 Folder 1 (Originally Box 4 Folder 1) was rearranged into chronological order, acid free paper was placed between each newspaper clipping, and any duplicates were deaccessioned. Folder 2 and Folder 3 had acid free paper added between childhood and early drawings by Carolyn. Folder 4 was rearranged chronologically, with excess copies of exhibition catalogues deaccessioned, and Folder 6 was also rearranged chronologically. Box 2 contains files from Betsy Wyeth’s Wyeth Foundation Office (“the Oval Office”), more newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, and items related to Frank Delle Donne (former husband of Carolyn Wyeth). Additional reference materials, photocopies, and printouts related to Delle Donne were removed from this collection in the Research Center and sent to the Curatorial Department’s artist files on the Museum third floor. Final edits and evaluation of work were made by Manager Lillian Kinney.
